How Serious Is Sural Nerve Pain?

Have you ever experienced any discomfort, numbness and tingling sensations in your ankle and foot that goes worse at night that would even disturbed you from sleep? If you have, then you might been experiencing, sural nerve pain.

Sural nerve pain comes from irritation or injury to the sural nerve. How Serious Is Sural Nerve Pain?

The sural nerve travels down the back of the leg along the Achilles tendon and crosses over to the back of the fibula (outside the ankle bone) before it curves down along the heel and proceeds out to the little toe.

The sural nerve only provides sensation to a small area along the outside of the foot and the 4th and 5th toes.

In sural nerve pain, the sural nerve might be inflamed, injured or irritated from shoes, such as a thick seam or strap that pushes on the Achilles tendon, outside of the heel or the foot.

However, there are times that sural neuritis will lead to scarring, wherein the sural nerve can become “entrapped”  or wrapped up in scar tissue that pulls on the nerve resulting in irritation of the nerve and pain.  If the nerve is entrapped, injections or physical therapy may help mobilize and break up the scar tissue. Sometimes surgery (always the last resort) is required to free any of the scar tissue from around the nerve.

As an after thought, although sural neuritis can be improved with ice pack application and anti-inflammatory drugs. It is important however, to make sure you stop the irritation to the nerve and get rid of any shoes that might be irritating the nerve – some ski boots and cycling shoes can do this.
