Foods That Cause Acne

Having an acne breakout is every teenager’s worst nightmare! And we have a bad news to those who love the greasy, sweet stuff in their plates. Doctors believe in the diet-acne connection and that some common foods are said to be breakout triggers. Meet the 5 foods you have to despise if you don’t like to have those zits popping in your face.

Foods That Cause Acne

Cow’s Milk and Cheese

According to, Dr. Frank Lipman, an integrative and functional medicine physician and the founder of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City.

Dairy causes spikes in certain pimple-producing hormones. I encourage patients to have almond milk, rice milk, coconut milk, or hemp milk instead of cow’s milk,” he explains.

Foods That Cause Acne

Chocolates

“The sugar in chocolates can absolutely cause the breakouts, because it’s pro-inflammatory. Acne is considered an inflammatory condition, and someone with acne-prone skin should follow an anti-inflammatory diet,” as Dr. Lipman.

Bread

If you’re prone to acne, then baguettes, croissants, and all that other good stuff may make the situation worse.

Wheat causes inflammation. And to get rid of acne, you want to reduce inflammation in your body,” explains Dr. Lipman.

Peanuts

Peanuts contain androgen, which can make acne worse by increasing sebum production.

Peanuts will generally make people more oily. I’ve had clients with white pustules around the nose from eating more peanut butter than usual,” Lipman says.

Those are the 5 foods that cause acne, but the question now is: What should we eat then?

Well, researchers say that we’d better stick to something fresh and whole, like protein, vegetables, healthy fats, and gluten-free grains.

We don’t want to tell people they can’t eat these foods for the rest of their lives, but without eliminating them, we can’t find out what’s triggering the acne,” Lipman says.
